Roadway Design Projects
USH 18,
Prairie du Chein, Crawford County, WI
Westbrook was
contracted for the design of 1.4 miles of reconstruction of USH 18 just
South of the City of Prairie du Chein, Wisconsin. The existing roadway
was a two lane rural highway located in a newly developed commercial
area. Westbrook’s objective when designing the project was to increase
the capacity of the roadway.
Our design team
accomplished increasing the capacity of the road by developing a
four-lane urban roadway design that incorporated a left turn lane in the
median. We also relocated a side street so the appropriate spacing
between traffic signals at two adjacent intersections could be achieved.
This helped to regulate the traffic flow and spacing. Traffic signals
were installed at three intersections as part of the project.
The new design
also included adding storm sewer and two retention ponds to replace the
large flat ditches along the existing roadway. A ten-foot wide
bike/pedestrian path was added on the south side of the roadway. This
was incorporated into the project to provide a safe place for
non-vehicular transportation to access businesses along the highway.
Street lighting was also added along the roadway to increase safety.
