Bridges Gallery
Sixth Street, Mount Horeb, WI
The Village of Mount Horeb, after a great deal of controversy,
decided to remove their old timber bridge, which it had declared a local
historical site. The Village required the new bridge to resemble the old
one. But, in addition to this concern, there was a more practical one:
seeing oncoming traffic over the rise of the old bridge had been
difficult, and, because it stood near an intersection, this posed a
hazard to drivers.
Westbrook lowered the rise and improved the vertical alignment of the
approaches and the new structure, removing the hazard. We used concrete
abutments, wings and pier walls for strength and durability, and then
used an architectural form liner with concrete stain to give the
appearance of hand-lain stone.
This bridge won the 2001 Annual Award for Excellence in Highway Design
for Best Bridge Design by a Consultant. It was presented by Wisconsin
Department of Transportation.
