Cub Scouts Pay Visit to Firm
March 2003 - Richland Center WEBELOS (which stands for “We’ll Be Loyal Scouts”)
cub scouts Tyler Goodyear, Zachary Swenson, Zachary Christian and Aaron
Black visited Westbrook Associated Engineers, Inc. in Spring Green in
early February. Den leaders Herman and Sara Christian brought them to
wrap up the Engineering Badge before the boys go through the “Arrow of
Light” ceremony and become full-fledged boy scouts. Some of the badge
requirements included listing 10 different things engineers do,
constructing a model bridge and explaining how engineers use computers.
Design engineer Dina Bertolini gave the scouts a tour of the office and
explained what various engineers there do. Other employees demonstrated
how surveying equipment works, explained how computers translate
surveying information into three-dimensional maps and described how
engineers design structures to be safe. The scouts then constructed
model bridges out of cardboard and used colored pencils and magic
markers to decorate them.
Mr. Christian appreciated learning about the work that goes into
planning a structure before ground is even broken. “It’s always nice to
get behind-the-scenes,” he said.
While the other boys liked the tour and looking through the survey
scope, Aaron Black preferred making the bridges, saying of all the types
of engineers outlined, “I like the bridge engineers.” Westbrook plans to
keep a job application waiting for him.
